Skilled vs. Non-Skilled Caregiving

Skilled care is prescribed by a physician, in which the patient needs additional help. This includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy. Skilled care is typically covered by Medicare or other private insurance and overseen by a registered nurse. Skilled care usually lasts an hour depending on the therapy prescribed.

Non-skilled care is NOT paid for by Medicare; it is paid for by the client. Services may include bathing, grooming, housekeeping, and errands. Shifts can be from 4 hours up to 24 hours. In Michigan, there are no state licensing guidelines for non-skilled private duty care. It is imperative that research is done before hiring a private duty agency.
