The Healing Power of Pets: A Story of Bella and Beyond
For those who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Bella, let me introduce you. Bella is not just a cherished family member; she’s also a service dog and a therapy dog. Our journey to welcoming Bella into our lives began during the challenging times of COVID, as my husband and I were both recovering from significant health diagnoses. Choosing Bella was a deeply intentional decision, rooted in the belief that she would be a beacon of healing for both of us. Bella has been an integral part of my recovery from cancer and the trauma related to my medical diagnosis, as well as other personal traumas. While my husband was initially skeptical, he, too, has come to appreciate Bella’s remarkable healing presence. After all, he has also walked a tough path of recovery following a life-threatening heart attack in 2019.
This brings me to the inspiring story of Stephen Knight, the 2024 CNN Hero of the Year Award recipient. Stephen founded a non-profit organization dedicated to providing foster care for dogs while their owners undergo rehabilitation for substance use disorders. His journey of healing and recovery from addiction began in 2011, and through his work, he recognized the profound impact of caring for someone’s pet while they receive treatment. This act of service not only supports the person in recovery but also ensures the pet receives the love and care it needs. For many, the fear of losing their pet to a shelter is a significant barrier to seeking help, delaying much-needed treatment.
In the United States, many treatment centers cannot accommodate individuals with pets. However, exceptions do exist. At Feinberg Consulting, when we work with individuals and their families to secure treatment for mental health or addiction, we explore options for pet care as a critical part of the treatment plan. The presence of a beloved pet can play a crucial role in the ongoing healing process post-discharge.
As the holiday season begins, it’s essential to remove any barriers that might prevent someone from seeking treatment. Everyone deserves a chance to get help quickly. Whether it’s finding pet-friendly treatment centers, supporting non-profits that offer foster care for pets, or spreading awareness about available resources, we must work together to ensure both people and their pets can embark on a path of healing and recovery.
Let’s make this holiday season a time of hope and healing for everyone. 🐾
